Automation Workflows for Safety

Build automated safety document generation workflows using n8n — from method statements to risk assessments and safe work procedures with approval gates.

1 day (7 contact hours) Safety teams, operations managers Hands-on with n8n

Course Overview

This course corresponds to Day 2 of the AI for Safety Masterclass and can be taken as a standalone programme.

Automation Workflows for Safety teaches you to move beyond single-document AI generation into linked, automated pipelines. Using n8n — an open-source workflow automation platform — you will build workflows that generate method statements, risk assessments, and safe work procedures in sequence.

The course covers data modelling with Google Sheets, linked document generation where outputs from one step feed into the next, approval gates for human review, and hierarchy-of-controls rule sets for automated compliance checking.

By the end of the day, you will have a working n8n workflow ready to deploy in your organisation.

Full-Day Agenda

0900 – 0930

Welcome and course objectives

Introductions, recap of AI fundamentals, and overview of automation concepts.

0930 – 1030

Introduction to n8n workflow automation

What n8n is, how it works, and why it is suited for safety document automation. Setting up your first workflow.

1030 – 1045

Break

1045 – 1200

Data modelling and linked document generation

Building a Google Sheets data model for safety inputs. Designing linked pipelines: method statement to risk assessment to safe work procedure.

1200 – 1300

Lunch

1300 – 1400

Lab: Method statement generation

Hands-on exercise building an n8n workflow that generates method statements from structured input data.

1400 – 1500

Lab: Risk assessment generation

Hands-on exercise generating risk assessments linked to method statement outputs, with hazard-control mapping.

1500 – 1515

Break

1515 – 1615

Lab: SWP with control linking and review gates

Building safe work procedures that reference RA controls. Implementing approval gates and review workflows.

1615 – 1700

Hierarchy-of-controls rule sets and wrap-up

Configuring automated compliance checks using hierarchy-of-controls rules. Recap, Q&A, and next steps.

Hands-On Labs

Build real automation workflows during the course.

1

Method Statement Generation

Build an n8n workflow that takes structured activity data and generates a formatted method statement with step-by-step procedures.

2

Risk Assessment Generation

Create a linked workflow that produces risk assessments from method statement outputs, mapping hazards to controls automatically.

3

SWP with Control Linking

Generate safe work procedures that cross-reference risk assessment controls, with approval gates that route documents for review.

4

Review Gates

Implement review and approval workflows that pause document pipelines until a designated reviewer has signed off.

Tools and Platforms

n8n

Open-source workflow automation platform used to build and run safety document generation pipelines.

Google Sheets

Used as the data model layer for safety input data — activity descriptions, hazard registers, and control libraries.

What You Will Take Away

Working n8n Workflow

A fully configured workflow for linked method statement, risk assessment, and SWP generation.

Review Log Template

A structured review and approval log for tracking document generation and sign-off.

Hierarchy-of-Controls Rule Set

Automated compliance rules that check generated documents against hierarchy-of-controls requirements.

Certificate of Completion

Professional certificate recognising completion of the Automation Workflows for Safety course.
